Do not postpone your baby’s vaccines unless he is sick or feverish ||Use a firm mattress and avoid placing your baby on thick, fluffy padding that may interfere with breathing if your baby's face presses against it ||To keep the eye free of infection, massage inner lower corner of the eye twice daily to empty it of old fluids ||Contact the doctor if your newborn isn't gaining weight, wets fewer than six diapers a day or shows little interest in feedings ||Put a photo of a face – yours – on the side of the cot for your baby to look at. Human faces fascinate babies ||Proper weight gain is the sign that your baby is having enough milk. Routine care of the newborn
1. Weighing the baby.
2. Initiation of breast feeding ASAP.
3. Minimize handling to decrease the risk of infection.
4. Prophylactic antibiotic eye drops to prevent common eye infection of the newborn.
5. Care of the cord by daily painting with 70% alcohol till it falls within 7- 14 days.
Warning signs in the newborn
1. Weak or no feeding and suckling.
2. Persistent vomiting.
3. Bleeding.
4. Yellowish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes.
5. Difficulty in breathing with rapid respiration or bluish discoloration of the skin.
6. Recurrent choking or coughing with feeding.
7. Not passing stool or urine.
8. Weak activity.
9. Hypo or hyperthermia.
