Is sun exposure important?
Yes. Sun exposure is essential for almost every child.  The advantages of exposure to the sun include reduction of the neonatal jaundice, formation of vitamin D inside your child's body (the vitamin that prevents rickets (bowing of bones) ). In addition, it gives your child a healthier skin and a richer exposure to the environment.
The hours needed are at least two hours per week of at least head exposure, if the weather is too cold. This is direct sunlight exposure not through glass.
The advisable hours are from sun rise to 10am, and 3 hours before the sunset. Exposure beyond these hours is much less beneficial and might be harmful (related to the ozone layer decay).

The alternative for parents who do not have the facility or time for this, and surprisingly these are many, is vitamin D supplementation. This supplementation should start around the first month of life. The recommended daily dose for your child ranges from 200 to 800 international units. Ask your doctor or call 2356 for more details.
