How to prepare your child for Ramadan?

Parents need to instill in their children the spirit of Ramadan. What we do during this month shows our children what this month should mean to them. When we live a spiritually elevated life in Ramadan, then that is how our children will understand Ramadan.

We need to impress on our children that this is a special month and that its arrival is an occasion for joy. They need to see us looking forward to it, and they need to share the celebratory atmosphere with us.

Ramadan is a good occasion for us to give our children the gift of a beautiful Qur'ân of their very own. It is also a time for us to give them books on Islam suitable for their age – books that are colorful and attractive.

Children should be allowed to participate in the distribution of alms to the poor and the needy. This experience teaches children to appreciate the great blessings that they have while developing in them the value of helping others

On a practical front, for first-timers during Ramadan, children can be encouraged to fast until 10:00 a.m or noon. This time barrier can be gradually increased until afternoon or early evening Parents should make sure that the children are fed well at suhoor.

The first fast a child observes should be an occasion for celebration. That first day is extra-difficult for a child, so its achievement should be acknowledged by a gift

If the child breaks the fast and lies about it, do not call her or him a liar. It's likely the child lied because he/she didn't want to disappoint the parent. Instead, use the lie as an opportunity to teach children the importance of honesty.

For children fasting or trying to, promise them Eid gifts so that they look forward to the Muslim holiday of Eid and are motivated to fast during Ramadan at the same time
