Sleep sacks and sufficient layers of clothing are safe alternatives to blankets for children less than six months of age ||Look for early signs of hunger, such as stirring and stretching, sucking motions and lip movements. The more active she is, the more likely she will drop things, run into things, or fall down. ||The AAP recommends sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump falls off — which might take up to three weeks ||Contact the doctor if your newborn isn't gaining weight, wets fewer than six diapers a day or shows little interest in feedings ||Alternate the first breast you offer at each feed ||AAP recommends to avoid blankets (a potential suffocation hazard) until your baby reaches her first birthday ||
Unsafe Foods for Toddlers

 

  • Hot dogs (unless cut in quarters lengthwise before being sliced)
  • Hard candies, including jelly beans
  • Nuts
  • Chunks of peanut butter (Peanut butter may be spread thinly on bread or a cracker—but never give chunks of peanut butter to a toddler.)
  • Popcorn
  • Raw carrots, celery, green beans
  • Seeds (such as processed pumpkin or sunflower seeds)
  • Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes (Cut them in quarters.)
  • Large chunks of any food such as meat, potatoes, or raw vegetables and fruits
