Sunburns

It is inflammation and erythema of the skin caused by excessive exposure to UV rays in direct sunlight

We are more susceptible to have sunburns in summer. The bright reflective surfaces  (water, sand, ce ) increase the severity of those burns.

Chronic exposure to UV-Rays in direct sunlight is one of the risk factors of developing skin cancer. experts now beleve that although sunscreens allow longer in the sun without burning, the carcinogenic effects of sun exposure are still occuring. This falsely percieved "safe" exposure is leading to the rapidly rising incidence of skin cancer throughout the world. For this reason, it's vital that you protect your child in the sun

How to protect ourselves against sunburns

Try to avoid direct sun exposure between 10 am and 2 pm (the maximum intensity)

Put a sunscreen which is waterproof, protects against UVA and UVB rays, and with SPF (sun protection factor) at least 15. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going out in the sun and then every two hours, or after swimming.

How to treat them if they happen

Apply cold fomentations to the affected areas of the skin and if the pain is severe use paracetamol as analgesic

F.A.Q.

Many parents ask if the sunscreen with SPF 30 is twice as effective as that with SPF 15. The answer is no there is only slight increase in the protective ability between both ( 94 % & 97% respectively) .
